SKILLS AGAINST VIOLENCE ACT

SKILLS AGAINST VIOLENCE ACT

September 16, 2024

Congress passed the Skills Against Violence Bill for all survivors of abuse to receive a skilled trade at no cost.

Congressman Colin Allred announced the passing of the Skills Against Violence Act; that is Co-Lead by Congresswoman Sykes. This bill ensures survivors in our country will have access to learning a skilled trade and a safe workspace at no personal cost.

“The Skills Against Violence Act will give victims of abuse the support and tools they need to find a job so they can turn the page to the next chapter of their lives. No one should be forced to stay in a dangerous situation due to a lack of financial resources,” said Congressman Allred.

“Oftentimes, survivors of domestic violence struggle to leave a violent situation because they lack the financial resources to do so. The Skills Against Violence Act will create the first-ever workforce development program for survivors of domestic violence, ensuring they have the skills and opportunities they need to become financially independent. I’m proud to co-lead this effort with Rep. Allred that will empower survivors and save lives,” said Congresswoman Sykes.

“I will continue to explore the best interest of survivors, while educating organizations, employers and government officials on how to maximize the potential of all survivors to ensure they are self-sufficient and living a well balanced life without abuse”, said Dr. Antoria Gillon.

Survivors often feel compelled to uproot their lives completely to ensure safety, leaving behind their homes and workplaces. Shelters cover the housing aspect, but the matter of livelihood is overlooked.

This petition is aimed at addressing exactly that, by providing survivors with the opportunity to learn a skilled trade at no personal cost. Access to such programs would offer survivors the chance to secure an income and sustain independence, all the while feeling empowered by their own capabilities.

We are proud to announce Skills Against Violence Act will ensure survivors financial independence across the United States.

A skilled trade in the hand of a survivor, is like a seed plated on good soil. It will run and thrive.
